Head lowered, the shaggy beast raced at them, green eyes hissing eldritch steam and spittle flying from its open mouth as it closed the distance between them.

Jasmin threw a glowing shield up before them at the last moment, just as Torie grabbed Emil and pushed him aside, knocking him to the ground behind her as she raised her own hands, glowing with her magic. Torie spun to face the creature, throwing her own magic into the protective barrier.

The shield shimmered and held as the beast collided with it, snarling and clawing. Emil scrambled to his feet; eyes wide in terror. The great shifter was relentless, pounding against the barrier with its massive body, trying to break through. Finally, with a desperate push, it breached the shield and lunged at Emil, teeth bared.

He fell backward as the bear dropped on top of him, its great, wet maw inches from closing on his head. Emil closed his eyes, choosing not to look death in the face, and waited for the snap that would most likely sever his head from his body.

It was a snap that didn’t come. And when he opened one eye to peek, he saw the bear’s mouth held firmly closed by a ghostly blue muzzle. He glanced aside and saw Torie standing there, hands glowing with the same blue magic, struggling against the bear’s strength as it sought to free itself of the constraints she had cast around its jaws.

Still in shock, Emil felt a jolt shoot through his body, a surprising shock, but not terribly unpleasant. A yellow light surrounded him, solidifying, and pulling him away from the bear’s reach. Jasmin had cast a glowing spell that propelled the sprite away from them, throwing him out of harm’s way as she closed in on the shifter from behind.

Sensing her approach, the bear wheeled with surprising speed. With a swipe of its great paw, it broke through Torie’s muzzle and lowered its massive head at Jasmin. It charged, and she dove to one side, barely escaping the claws that raked the air where she had been standing only seconds before. Hitting the ground, she stabbed both hands into the earth as she whispered an incantation into the night.

The ground around her rumbled as she called for sleeping vegetation to spring forth and restrain the creature.

Only nothing happened. The rumble stopped, and the look of shock on her face spurred the monster on to attack her yet again.

Before he could land on her, Torie acted, calling on her magic to generate more restraints, this time in the form of glowing chains. She cast them about the beast, driving the free ends into the earth to fasten him in place. The shifter roared in anger and threw its bulk against the chains.

Looking on in shock, Torie watched as her construct began to weaken. Blackness crept from the earth into her chains, degrading the magic within. Soon, they crumbled, breaking into a million pieces and falling away from the bear in a shower of fragmented black light.
